Live music weekend

October 1st, 2005 · No Comments

Last night I went to see a local music project, Afro-Cuban Beat Project, that has 2 of my fellow LIS students, Mike Carberry and Heide Radtke, in it at a bar in Urbana, The Iron Post.

It was very good despite the fact that it was free and I hope to see more of them.

There is actually a whole lot of live music in town this weekend thanks to the Wall to Wall Guitar Festival at Krannert and the Pygmalion Music Festival which took place in multiple venues around Champaign and Urbana.  I really wish I could’ve caught more of the artists from both festivals.  I really wanted to see Kate Hathaway (GSLISer Mike Carberry is in her band too!) but she didn’t play until midnight last night.  I can see her at Aroma Cafe in a few weeks at a more respectable 8 PM, so I put it off.  I also just found out she may be playing the Illini Union this Thursday evening, although I couldn’t verify it.

This morning, Emily, Amber and I saw Dan Zanes and Friends at Krannert.  Now this was just plain fun.  About half of the crowd was kids, mostly under the age of 10.  Lots of sing-alongs, dancing, the Hokey Pokey, accordion, spoons, ukelele, and so on.  Normally I wouldn’t want to be anywhere near that many children but they were generally well-behaved, but then it is hard to misbehave when you are encouraged to participate in organized zaniness.
