Recently I got all snarky on Jakob Nielsen, although I did admit that he had a few good points about weblog usability, if they were taken for the right reasons. His point #5 was that Classic Hits are Buried. I did mention that I had been thinking about...

Concentrate now. You will trust me… You will believe every word I write…. For those of you who need to have a (blurry) picture of me so that you will believe what I write: go here. Aren't I so much more believable now? /sarcastic Jakob Nielsen referenc...

Mark, thanks. Again. You highlighted some of the things that made me uncomfortable about that list, most of all the idea that I'm supposed to be actively seeking to sell myself. Who said that's why I do this?

And... the Nazi stuff. That's worth thinking on, and really ties into a quiet personal philosophy that's been growing in my mind. I said to some colleagues on Friday night, "I've put enough of myself on the internet that I'll only get a new job if the committee likes me as a person, because so much information is easily findable about who I am outside my job." And the response from one faculty member was "and would you want to work for them if they didn't like you?"

And the answer's no. I'm not willing to be a personal and a professional creature -- I'm one being. All of me, take it or leave it.

I don't worry much about Pastor Nielsen, since I know I am going to burn anyhow. (Did you ever hear that little story about the physics student answering if hell is exothermic or endothermic. I will find it for you if not, but a Google search will likely find it. Anyhow, one of the conclusions is we are all going to hell). I'll just install air conditioning when I get there. Once again, this is an excellent post. It makes people think (is that provocative? Don't worry, I won't go there). I have a reply/conversation piece post coming up in my blog, but I wanted to stop by and thank you for giving me some food for thought in the meantime.

By the way, Angel is my real name. Go to my MPOW's website (it's on the blog's links, and follow the directory if you really want to know).

Also by the way, I did go over and read some of the criticism of Nielsen that you linked to. Some of those guys are not afraid to rip him a new one. "Spanking Nielsen"? That was actually one title or close to it. I am not sure I could have gotten away with that, but it's good. How is that for an informative post title? I also liked that you gave a book list. Always enjoy when others say, "here is more you can use to learn." Maybe the educator in me. I read some of Todorov's work in graduate school in my previous to librarian incarnation. He does have some interesting things now and then relevant to today, in my humble view.

Well, until next time, best.
