I am glad to see that once in a while a person gets what they deserve: Papa’s got a brand new bag (of metadata) at Inherent Vice.
This is the job that I was hoping to get; really hoping to get. But once I found out my friend Richard is the one getting it I was quite happy for him.
Richard is far more qualified than me, and he also deserves this position based on all the things he’s done and been involved in the last several years. I wish him and everyone else involved in this project the best. I will also be very interested in the outcomes and lessons learned from this project.
Me? I’m settling in and going to do the best I can to learn serials cataloging: copy, maintenance, and original; often in a Western European language. I’m a bit concerned at what I’ve bitten off here, but I’m also seriously stoked about it.
So congrats to Richard and to me! I think we both got what we deserved here.
And on the class front, I managed to talk to Dr. Renear today and dropped his Ontologies class for now. This leaves me with:
- 590CS Seminar in Classification Systems for the Organization of Knowledge
- 590TR Information Transfer and Collaboration in Science
- 590IML Information Modeling
Allen’s Ontologies in the Natural Sciences class would have fit very well with my ideas for applying issues in classification to scientist’s needs as users of info systems, but I cannot do it all. Best yet, Allen and my advisor, Kathryn, both feel these are the right decisions for me. There may be a humanities ontologies course in the future or, as Allen said, I could do something via independent study.
Richard, I may have wanted that job, but this outcome makes me feel the world is right; seriously! Congrats again.

That’s very gracious of you. I know how excited about the job you were, but I think you’re in a great place, and I know your concern was someone not as interested would get the position. At least that isn’t true!

Sometimes it is really difficult working within a small community. One one hand you get the oppotunity to meet and work with fabulous people like Mark, at the same time that you are sharing the same limited resources. I can’t really say whether there is any fairness in any of this, but I hope to bring the same kind of passion to the position that you would have. Thanks for your support and well wishes! Best of luck with serials cataloging, you are definately more qualified than I to tackle those challenges!
