I need some help with a del.icio.us problem, folks. Maybe if I hadn’t had this problem for such a long time my Bloglines keep alive numbers would actually be manageable.
I have the “my del.icio.us” and “post to del.icio.us” buttons on my toolbars in Firefox for both the PC and my Mac.
On the Mac, everything works as I expect. I click on the add button and I am taken directly to the screen where I can tag the post and save it.
On the PC, I get a screen that says, “in order to save an item, you have to log in” and I have to type my username and password for every item! The thing is, if you look in the upper right corner it says that I am logged in already.
By the way, if I click on “my del.icio.us” button on the PC I am taken directly in.
Anyone have any ideas? Do I perhaps need a newer version of the “post to…” button? The PCs is probably older. Some crazy cookie issue, that I can perhaps resolve? Or am I stuck?
I do much prefer my Mac, but all that pointing and clicking is so much easier with a full-size mouse than with my PowerBook’s trackpad.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

mark, I don’t have that problem on my PC — I’m logged in, my toolbar buttons work effortlessly, and all is well. Try downloading newer versions?

I use a PC, but I haven’t used the “official” del.icio.us toolbar button. I use the “unofficial” version and LOVE it. You can get it here. It’s only one button (which helps with the toolbar clutter), and you only have to log in once per computer, even if you delete your cookies.

Thanks, ladies. I tried Iris’ solution first after first uninstalling my bookmarklets, but I don’t use the sidebar, nor could I actually make it do anything. I also spent little time on it, truthfully, but it needs to be rather intuitive doesn’t it?
I then tried reinstalling the bookmarklets, but I get the same stupid behavior–need to login while already logged in.
Then I installed the del.icio.us plugin. I don’t really like the buttons being in the top button bar, I’d prefer them in the toolbar, but OK. That does thankfully go right to the tag and save page, but now the problem is my tags are NOT shown. I either get suggestions if other people have saved it (and I could care less) or none at all.
Jenica, are you using the plugin or the bookmarklets? I assume from your comment that you are successfully using the bookmarklets. But if you are using the plugin, does it show your tags?

I use the bookmarklet on my PC, running Firefox 2.0.0.1 — could you share what the href of the link created in the bookmarklet is, Mark? It might be an older or ill-configured bookmarklet.
Mine is:
javascript:location.href=’http://del.icio.us/post?v=4;url=’+encodeURIComponent(location.href)+’;title=’+encodeURIComponent(document.title)

Depending on the security software you’re using, it could be “some crazy cookie issue”–the good programs (e.g. ZoneAlarm Pro) default to blocking third-party cookies (for privacy and tracking reasons), and that will sometimes disable the transfer of login information. (I found that out yesterday, when I couldn’t use the online databases at my public library from home…until I enabled third-party cookies for the duration of the session.)
So I’d check that; just a possibility.

That’s strange. If it’s not showing you your tags then I don’t know what’s up. I’d just echo Walt’s suggestion.

Ben,
This is it:
javascript:location.href=’http://del.icio.us/post?v=4;url=’+encodeURIComponent(location.href)+’;title=’+encodeURIComponent(document.title)
Walt,
Good idea. I’ll look into that. I do use ZoneAlarm, which I generally like. But I have rarely been able to make it do the things I’d like to regarding specific exemptions and such. So I’ll definitely try poking around.
It still seems so odd though, because the “my del.icio.us” button uses javascript and works fine, and the “post to…” button works as in goes to a del.icio.us page that wants me to log in while reporting that I AM logged in.
As odd as that is, you probably are on to something.
I’ll let everyone know if I get it figured out once I have time to play with ZoneAlarm.
Right now, I’m off to eat and read.
“Read and eat. Eat and read. Does he do anything else with his life?” he began to wonder on a cold but sunny Sunday afternoon.

Thanks goes to Walt! I unchecked the “block 3rd party cookies” in ZoneAlarm and it works now.
Now for the next question(s): Is there a way to reenable it and have an exemption list?
Also, not to be a pain, Walt, but do you know how to configure ZA to let Windows update the time? I prefer time.nist.gov. I tried setting up am expert firewall rule but have never been able to get it to work.

Mark,
My knowledge of ZoneAlarm is right up there with my knowledge of Zoroastrianism. I’ve only been using it for a few weeks (haven’t yet posted a followup since I publicly switched from Norton), and I haven’t tried to dig into customization much. I only discovered the 3rd party cookies because, ahem, the failed login to commercial databases from my Mountain View Public Library screen said something about third-party cookies… And I realized at that point that they’re sometimes necessary as a cheap version of proxy.
Sorry I can’t be more help. Some day, maybe when I stop writing so much, I’ll dig into it…

Don’t be sorry, Walt. I’d much rather have you writing!
While a little extra (friendly) mid- and upper-level tech support would be a wonderful thing in my life, your writing is more valuable to me than having my computer synced to the time server.
