8 supposedly random things about me

May 30th, 2007 · 18 Comments

Not tagged as far as I know but will play along anyway.

1. Having recently been “syndicated” in 2 places (that I’m aware of) [1][2], I don’t really know how I feel about this.**
[My last name is misspelled at one of them, but that is anything but random.]

2. I need an interview suit.

3. I really dislike shaving. And I don’t care much for beards.

4. The top 3 artists in my collection by number of CDs are: Ella Fitzgerald, Ani DiFranco, and Lambchop.

5. I dislike the orthography of “dependant.” I know the dictionary says it’s fine, but I still think it looks ugly.

6. I had an hour-long massage today. Been way too long.
btw, my massage therapist has been doing this a long time and she considers my back to be the toughest she has ever met. Not exactly a compliment. :(

7. Went to a meeting. Did my duty and wrote it up. Got invited to be on a “hot topic” panel at ALA. Pretty random.

8. If I wasn’t going to be out of town this Friday I could have had lunch with somebody I said I wanted to punch.
[That was just a metaphorical punch, btw. Oh well, hopefully soon. Eat your heart out, Tracy. ;) ]

** In my quest for brevity I wasn’t as clear as I’d have liked to be. I am honored to be included with many of the folks on both of these lists. It’s just that I don’t think of my blog as a “cataloging blog” or a “coder blog” or even a “library blog.” It’s just (part) of me and, as some of you know, I am trying to stitch my life together. You will find shades of all sides of me here: the goofball, the word lover, the philosopher, the cataloger, the desirer, the depressive, the patriot, the protester, the father, the student, the reader, the music lover, the friend, the “32 flavors and then some.” Seeing as I’m still not sure how I feel about blogging, it’s pretty simple that I don’t know how I feel about being in other places. But I do appreciate it.

    Re: No. 5

I completely agree with you. Actually, I always thought it had all e’s in the vowel category; guess my spelling skills are a bit rusty.

I feel the same way about the word “cataloguing.” The word looks naked as just “catalog.”

  • 2 Mark // May 30, 2007 at 8:49 pm

It *does* have all e’s in the vowel category! I only said that dictionaries say it *can* have a final a. My Oxford American Dictionary says the a version is the British spelling. I didn’t even know an a was possible at all for probably 40 years.

Allowed or not, it’s ugly! And I even like many Briticisms. I love the -st endings and have generally taken to using amongst and such. Around here anyway.

But cataloguing. Oh no! I can take catalogue, if I must. But I choke on cataloguing. That u is nothing but extraneous! It may not be ugly, but it sure is homely looking.

All in all, it’s all good though. I’m trying to kick both the prescriptivist (especially) and the descriptivist angel and devil (which is which?) off my shoulders. Especially after reading 2 books by Roy Harris as suggested by David Bade. *Very* interesting how we got into these straits. Yes, indeedy.

btw, I also *much* prefer judgement to judgment. So, it’s not all about efficiency….

I need to buy a suit too. Times like this I wish I was a guy- womens suits confuse me.

And I’m with you on Ani Difranco- it’s pretty easy, she releases CD’s so frequently. :)

I agree with you–it should be dependent and independent.

Also, are you going to be wearing fancy pants clothes to ISKO?

  • 5 Mark // May 31, 2007 at 6:34 am

“Fancy pants clothes” - c’mon, you know that’s a concept that hardly has any space in my mental thesaurus. There’s like a place holder, but no scope note or definitions. It is a wonderfully phrased term for a concept, though.

I haven’t decided for certain. I will probably bring slacks and polo-like shirts, but I might dress down from that. I’m just going to this for fun, learning and to meet people. Most of the folks there probably aren’t going to be hiring me so my (limited) mental acumen is my best tool and not my clothes [which is the way it ought to be anyway!].

#2 really translates into I need one or more suits, period. I’m not wearing my Dress Blues and I have a leisure-like suit from Sears bought in the early 80s, and that’s it.

See, pretty much the whole concept space and lexicon for clothes is not present in my mind. I’m probably not going to be getting a thesaurus job at the Clothing Manufacturers of America any time soon.

I’ll let you know if I decide on something a little less “fancy.”

Mark, you know my tagging of you is always implicit! :) Why, it might even have an imaginary footnote or two attached. [hee]

I can help with inty suit. Something…. cool.

See you at IKSO. And I will NOT be dressing up because I get to be a bystander this time! Woot! It’s likely jeans and Keens for jennimi….

  • 7 Mark // May 31, 2007 at 8:35 am

Yes’m, *I* know. But I didn’t want to publicly claim you tagged me because people might look and say, “No she didn’t!” It’s not a good thing to make people wrong when the “proof” is only in one’s own head.

Now, now. Don’t leave things to my imagination … as weak as it may be. ;)

Yeah, I need to talk to Kathryn about clothes but I’m leaning to the jeans and t-shirt look for Toronto, too. Or, depending on the weather more like shorts and t-shirts. Or I could wear a “Hawaiian” shirt and then they’d be “button shirts.”

You aren’t the only one who doesn’t like “cataloguing” (and neither does my browser spellchecker). It just looks sticky to me (get it?). And I can’t stand that LISA uses that particular spelling in their index, especially since I’ve been having to type it in umpteen times over the past few days.

Back to my paper on *cataloging* special collection backlogs…

[OK, we'll try this in parts since I'm running up against the spam filter again trying to talk about LIS with normal words! :( ]

    Yes, I do get it.

LISA? What the heck is that?

  • 11 Mark // May 31, 2007 at 8:50 pm

If you just read enough things you wouldn’t have to search! Follow the trail, young Jedi.

  • 12 jenny // May 31, 2007 at 8:50 pm

yeah i dress up day to day unlike you academic types (hee). so i am not at all. screw that.

  • 13 Mark // May 31, 2007 at 8:52 pm

Backlogs, cool! Got any thing from the 1890s; I’m becoming good at the 1890s stuff. ;)

  • 14 Mark // May 31, 2007 at 8:55 pm

Glad to hear it, jenny. We’re all going natural, or unnatural, as the case may be.

  • 15 Mark // May 31, 2007 at 9:17 pm

P.S. I think I seriously over-dressed for NASIG. I may just wear the shorts and shirts I brought. I’d have felt better with jeans perhaps, but those slacks and polos are too much. :(

I’ll wear one of the get-ups tomorrow and then see after that.

  • 16 jenny // Jun 4, 2007 at 6:38 am

yeah that was sort of a conference turning point for me–”oh you can dress casually and it’s still a meaningful discussion? and they give you food? wow i love it here!”

  • 17 Mark // Jun 4, 2007 at 6:51 am

Yes, it was nice. I went back and forth between my “good clothes” and shorts and t-shirts.

When you have presenters in shorts (and not just guys) you know it’s relaxed. This just shows these are some of the brightest professionals I know.
