Hey k, you're welcome. You have succinctly summarized my concerns about "the dream."

And if it was supposedly so personal, then what was the point of commercial operations to supply these things with trails in place, or of swapping them with each other? With the right method of doing so--marking your own trails versus those of others, switching focus (privileging) from one person's set of trails to another's, easy updating of trails, removal of unwanted trails, etc.--then it might work reasonably as envisioned. But, dang, we're still nowhere near that even with the web.

Anyway, glad I'm read it. It fills in some gap in my own knowledge, and definitely added to my own (mental) associative trails. :)

Hi Mark,

Thanks for pointing to that ARIST chapter, I had a chance to check it out this afternoon.

I was left wondering, if the memex was supposed to be manage personal knowledge through associative trails based on an individual's use of item, how it could possibly address that overwhelming tide of new information, which Bush seemed to point to as a motivating force.

I suppose you would still have the sift through all the new stuff yourself. The memex would simply help you gain later access potentially useful trails (that you noted?) through the information.

Welcome, Kristina and thanks so much for the citations.

I think I noticed these as I was looking through the issues of KO at the library when I went to get the 2 articles I had cites for, but I was copying so much stuff (had other cites and the serendipitous things I was finding...) that I left these and then promptly forgot about them.

I will definitely look into them; hopefully soon.

Hey, I enjoy your posts on what you've been reading. Our reading interests overlap some.

You may be interested in the back and forth between Hjørland/Jeppe Nicolaisen and Beghtol on the use of the term "naive" to refer to classifications created by experts in their fields.
