Unfortunately, I had to grow up

August 26th, 2007 · 12 Comments

I just paid an awful lot of money for a suit. Well, and a tie, too, but mostly for a suit.
Heck, I still need a pair of dress shoes.

Being a big boy sucks. :(

I bet you look very dignified, though. :)

    :-)
    I feel your pain.

Hey, remember what Thoreau said about new suits:

“I say, beware of all enterprises that require new clothes, and not rather a new wearer of clothes.”

ooh i want photos. You know what’s worse–paying for dental visits–that’s the worst part of being an adult in my opinion.

Thanks, Iris, but I highly doubt it. I have no idea what I’m doing (or did) so I have no doubt I could have gotten the same look for a lot less. :(

Irvin, thanks for that citation, and I have to agree. The worst part is the new enterprise (assuming I get one) doesn’t actually require the suit. But the suit is required to get the new enterprise. What a freakin’ waste!

jenny, you’ll have to wait as the jacket is being altered and I still need shoes. Oh, and to make sure I have a decent shirt or I’ll need that, too.

Besides, I have no full length mirror like many folks do, so … I don’t know. ;)

Well, hang in there. It’s pretty much a given if you need a new suit and have not gotten one in a while, that you will have to pay dearly. I bought one a couple of years ago (to attend my brother’s wedding). Luckily, was able to use it for interviewing later too. Although, I should say I have found myself not wearing a full suit to interviews as I did the first time around. I guess I have a bit of a radar for places where they are more relaxed about it. Anyhow, as your other commenters said, I bet you do look dignified.

    Best, and keep on blogging.

Word of advice: it is so worth the extra money to purchase the wrinkle-free shirts. I like my husband’s Geoffrey Beene shirts; they seem to come out of the dryer the nicest. It never needs ironing and looks sharp all the same.

I’ll second the non-iron shirt suggestion. Brooks Brothers makes a very nice one which, while expensive, really holds up. I’m still wearing some I got back in early 2003, and for me that’s saying a lot. As for the suit: wedding, funerals and job interviews — you never know when they’ll pop up.

Hi Angel. I am hoping that it can get a bit more use; just not much. ;)

I’m just not the dressing up kind of guy!

Jenn and Kurt, thanks for the shirt advice. That’ll come in handy. I’m not much of an ironer anyway, especially after years of ironing BDUs!

Iron your uniforms and polish your boots so you can go “play” in the mud and/or dust. Makes a ton of sense to me. :(

I’m with Jenny–give us photos! Lands’ End also has some no-iron shirts at sort of reasonable prices that hold up well.

Hope your suit brings you the same good results that my ridiculously expensive suit did.

I think being a fat girl sucks even more. I wish I could just wear suits and ties — they’re great camouflage. ;)

Hi Em! OK, OK, ladies. I’ll get pictures … at some point. ;)

I still have to go pick the thing up, though.

Me too, Em. But I didn’t know y’all had a cataloging position open. :)

Hi Anna … and I’m not about to touch that comment, although I can understand the thought.

I wore camouflage for almost 20 years (camo uniforms were fielded after I was in) and I got tired of it. ;) But I do understand.

Off soon to pick up my new version camo….
